With their cinematic ballads and blues, wearing their shoes from the side of the road, Basset is full of timeless heart. Toronto-based acoustic songwriters Yasmine Shelton and Sam Clark will take you from a beekeeper’s fields to the haunted basement of a second-hand store, in a style that is all their own. With comparisons to Hozier, Bon Iver, and The Milk Carton Kids, their inventiveness shines on fiddle, intricate harmonies, and Shelton’s commanding lead vocals as these earnest musicians find their way into your heart.
They are currently preparing for the release of their debut LP, In the Clay, (Spring 2022), funded by a FACTOR Juried Sound Recording grant and Ontario Arts Council Creation grant. The album is being produced by Joshua van Tassel, a sonic landscaper and percussionist who performs with Donovan Woods and Rose Cousins and has produced for Rosie and the Riveters, Megan Bonnell, and Sarah Slean.
Basset released their debut EP in 2019 which now has over 21,000 Spotify streams. They performed at the Summerfolk Music Festival in Owen Sound in 2018 (headlined by Bahamas) and were part of the developing artist program at FMO in 2019 where Shelton received the Taylor Mitchell Bursary. In summer 2021, Basset performed at Boston’s Club Passim Campfire Festival and the Summerfolk Music Festival in Owen Sound. Shelton also took part in the Honey Jam Artist Development Program in summer 2021, which gave Basset the opportunity to perform at Honey Jam’s artist showcase at Toronto’s El Mocambo.
